User manual translation

Let Turkish users read your manual in clear Turkish, not machine translation

When a manual translation is poor, users misuse the product and returns and service complaints rise. Yeni İpekyolu (New Silk Road)’s technical translators translate your Chinese manual directly into natural Turkish, standardise button names, menu wording and warnings, and check consistency with the text on the product’s display.

01 · Overview

A manual Turkish users can read with ease

01

An unclear manual means service calls and returns

In Türkiye, the manual is generally seen as part of the product; consumers and importers expect a Turkish version, and many product groups also have regulations on this. But having a manual and having a usable manual are different things. If the text is stilted and the steps unclear, users misuse the product, call the service centre or simply return it, and all of that cost ultimately falls on the brand and the importer.

Turkish is an agglutinative language; a word can take several suffixes, and sentence structure is almost entirely different from Chinese. If Chinese is translated first into English and then from English into Turkish, the original meaning weakens across two stages. Translating directly from Chinese and having a native Turkish editor review it is the key to a natural, readable manual.

02

“Power button” on page 3, a different name on page 8

The most common problem in manuals is not grammatical errors but inconsistency: the same button appears as “power button” on page 3, “on/off button” on page 8 and under a third name in the app. Turkish users cannot tell whether these are the same thing. That is why, before translating, we extract all button, part and function names, build a term list and fix their equivalents.

Safety warnings also need to be standardised. We distinguish signal words by risk level and use the same pattern for warnings of the same type throughout the manual. Product display and app texts are also within the scope of the check, so the wording users see in the manual is the same as what they see on screen.

03

Why isn’t an English-only manual enough on Turkish shelves?

The first mistake is assuming Turks know English and providing only an English manual; in fact, ordinary consumers generally expect Turkish, and sales channels and regulations often require it too. The second is producing Turkish text with free machine translation; incomprehensible or even comical sentences spread as screenshots in e-commerce reviews. The third is using an old manual even though the product has changed, so values and images don’t match.

In addition, mains voltage in Türkiye is generally 230V/50Hz, and there are local conventions for plug type, units of measurement and date format. This information in the manual must match the version sold in Türkiye. If there is a model or hardware specific to the Turkish market, let us know in advance.

04

With translation memory, only the changed parts in a new version

At Yeni İpekyolu, a technical translator handles translation from Chinese into Turkish, a native Turkish editor handles readability, and a project manager handles terminology and version management. We deliver in the original format and keep the translation memory, processing only changed parts in new versions. Whether a manual meets the regulatory requirements for a particular product group should be confirmed by your compliance consultant or certification body; we do not issue certificates.

Prepare the manual source file, an export of the product display or app texts, and any English or previous Turkish version, and state the sales channel. A sample or usage video helps the translator understand the product more accurately. Sending all models at once makes it easier for us to analyse repeated content and unify terminology.

02 · Who it is for

Brands that will sell products with a Turkish manual

01

Consumer electronics and small appliance brands

Products such as phone accessories, robot vacuums and kitchen appliances call for plain language aimed at end users. Turkish consumers are used to the polite “siz” form of address and clear instructions in manuals. Instead of a text that reads like word-for-word Chinese, we write natural Turkish that fits these habits.

02

Industrial equipment and tool suppliers

Operating and maintenance instructions for equipment such as power tools, generators and pumps are translated for Turkish technicians. What matters to technicians is that values, torque, connections and maintenance intervals are correct. We use established Turkish industry terms that field staff understand immediately.

03

Cross-border e-commerce sellers

On Turkish e-commerce platforms, a Turkish manual reduces negative reviews and returns. Some negative reviews actually stem from users being unable to set up the product or using it incorrectly. Consistent wording between the manual and the product page also increases buyer confidence.

03 · Scope

Translation scope, from quick start guides to app screens

01

Complete user manual

Installation, operation, cleaning and maintenance, troubleshooting and technical specification sections. Voltage, frequency and units are written in the format commonly used in Türkiye. The “symptom–cause–solution” structure of the troubleshooting table is preserved in full.

02

Quick start guides and cards

In-box quick guides, pairing cards and text in images. These materials are small with limited space, so the Turkish text must be short and to the point. We control the character count to keep it legible in print.

03

Safety warnings

Warnings are translated with uniform wording according to severity, with no ambiguity or omissions. Turkish usually uses signal words such as “TEHLİKE” (danger), “UYARI” (warning) and “DİKKAT” (caution) to distinguish risk levels. Warnings of the same type are worded identically throughout the manual.

04

App and display text check

Menu and button names in the manual are matched against the actual text in the app. If the app’s Turkish interface is live, we use the interface text as the reference; if not, we can translate it together. Users being unable to find a button from the manual on the screen is a common cause of complaints.

05

Term base

A Chinese–Turkish term base for your product group, used directly for new models. The term base is delivered to you and can also be used in customer service, product pages and marketing texts. This way, the same terms are used from the manual through to after-sales communication.

What you need to provide

  • Manual source file (Word, InDesign or PDF)
  • Export of product display or app texts (to check button and menu names)
  • English version or previous Turkish translation, if available
  • Target sales channel (retail, e-commerce, industrial)
05 · Process

Send the manual and let’s start with the term list

  1. 1

    Send the manual

Send the source file and product screenshots or app texts. A sample or usage video, if available, greatly helps the translator understand real-world use. Please also state the sales channel and target user.

  2. 2

    Term extraction

Button, part and function names are extracted and their Turkish equivalents fixed. The term list is first sent to you or your Turkish importer for approval. Approved terms are used consistently throughout the text and in future projects.

  3. 3

    Translation and editing

A technical translator translates, and a native Turkish editor checks readability. The review follows the steps from the user’s perspective to see whether instructions are clear. Passages in the source that seem unclear or incorrect are raised with you in a query list.

  4. 4

    Delivery and updates

Delivered in the original format; the translation memory is kept for future versions. If you mark changes in a new version, we process only the differing parts. Projects that need layout can be moved to our end-to-end manual service.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our manual is only in Chinese, with no English version; can you translate it?

Yes. We translate directly from Chinese into Turkish; this is our core advantage. Because it does not pass through English, the drift that builds up in two-stage translation is avoided and time is saved.

The manuals for many of our models are largely the same; how is this priced?

Translation memory tools identify repeated content; repetitions are usually charged at a lower rate, with details stated in the quote. The more models and shared content there are, the more noticeable the savings. Send the files for all models together so we can analyse them in one go.

Can it go straight to print after translation?

If the source is a layout file such as InDesign, we can also handle the layout. Text-only translation is also possible; for layout you can choose our end-to-end manual service. If your own team will do the layout, make sure the font supports Turkish letters.

Isn’t machine translation with human post-editing faster and cheaper?

For simple, highly repetitive texts, machine assistance can sometimes be appropriate; but if there are errors in a manual’s safety warnings and operating steps, the brand bears the consequences. Machine translation from Chinese into Turkish is not as stable as between European languages. We recommend the right method for the text; safety-related content is always translated and checked by humans.

Should the manual include a service phone number and address in Türkiye?

For products sold to Turkish consumers, it is generally recommended to include the local importer’s or service contact details, and some product groups may have regulations on this. You or your importer must provide and approve this information. We translate it accurately and place it in the right spot.

How long does a Turkish manual usually take?

Time depends on word count, file format, repetition rate and whether term approval is needed. Quick start guides are usually quick, while comprehensive manuals for large equipment take longer. Once we receive the files, we provide a clear delivery plan.

Our product will also be sold in neighbouring countries besides Türkiye; can you handle that too?

Our expertise is translation between Chinese and Turkish. If other languages are needed, we can first edit the Chinese master text, so suppliers for the other languages work from the same source file and term list. This makes it easier to keep all language versions consistent in content.
