Technical writing for manuals
If the source manual is hard to follow, let’s write the content properly first, then present it to Turkish users
In many Chinese factories, manuals are written in a hurry by engineers: steps are skipped, warnings are missing, images and text don’t match, and even the most accurate translation is of no use. Yeni İpekyolu (New Silk Road)’s technical writers first look at the product and rebuild the structure, simplify the language and complete the safety information, then prepare the Turkish version, so the manual genuinely guides the user.

Rewriting the manual before translating it

A weak Chinese source gets even weaker in Turkish
Translation can only convey the source text faithfully; if steps are skipped, terms are muddled and warnings are missing in the Chinese manual, these problems remain in Turkish, or even grow. When Turkish users don’t understand the text, they don’t know the problem lies in the Chinese source; they simply think the brand is unprofessional. That is why, if the source is weak, doing technical writing first often lowers the total cost compared with direct translation.
Technical writing is not fancy wording but the redesign of information: in what situation does the user open the manual, what task do they want to do, in what order should they proceed, and where could they get hurt or damage the device? We reorganise the content around these questions, describe a single action in each step and tell users what they should see at the end. A Chinese master text written this way retains the same clarity when translated into Turkish.

From sample section approval to a bilingual archive
The project begins with understanding the product: we study existing documents, usage videos or a sample, and send our questions to your engineers. Next, we present a table of contents and a sample section and agree with you on the form of address, sentence length and image–text ratio. Once the sample section is approved, the full Chinese content is written, and your engineers check its technical accuracy point by point.
Once the Chinese text is approved, we move to translation; a technical translator translates into Turkish and a native Turkish editor checks readability. Projects that need printing can go straight to the layout and prepress service. The Chinese master text and Turkish version are archived together and changed together when the product is updated, so the two language versions don’t drift apart over time.

Warnings bunched at the start and internal model codes
Typical problems in Chinese factory manuals include using internal model codes as if they were function names, writing “install according to the instructions” without explaining the conditions, and grouping all warnings at the start instead of placing them next to the relevant step. This style may be understandable in China, but it is a serious obstacle for Turkish users. We move warnings next to the relevant action and replace internal names with names users understand.
Turkish manuals usually use the polite “siz” form of address, with clear and direct instructions; information such as units of measurement, dates and voltage is written according to local conventions. Signal words are usually used in warnings to distinguish risk levels. The content of safety information is determined by applicable standards and the certification body’s opinion; we arrange it according to the requirements you provide.
Not a CE or TSE certificate, but a usable manual
Yeni İpekyolu handles content review, structural design, Chinese writing and Turkish translation; final approval of technical content rests with your engineers. We do not issue certifications such as CE or TSE or decide on product conformity; the conformity outcome is determined by your certification body or compliance team. Our goal is a manual that is genuinely usable in terms of language and structure.
Prepare the existing manual or engineering documents, a sample or usage video, an engineer who can answer questions, and any applicable standard or certification requirements. If you have customer service records or users’ frequently asked questions, share those too; they help us find the parts of the manual most in need of improvement. The more complete the preparation, the shorter the writing time.
Manufacturers whose manuals Turkish users can’t follow
Factories whose manuals only engineers understand
The source text is a heap of terms with no order; it needs to be turned into steps users can follow. Because engineers know the product well, they assume users already have certain background knowledge. A technical writer looks through the eyes of someone using the product for the first time and adds back the skipped steps.
Brands with high return and service request rates
If most problems stem from installation or setup errors, a clearer manual usually reduces requests. We can start by looking at your customer service records or FAQs to find the points the manual doesn’t explain well enough. Rewriting prioritises these frequent problems.
New products entering Türkiye for the first time
For products that don’t yet have a manual, the Chinese and Turkish versions can be written from scratch. Text written with a clear structure from the outset also makes later translation into other languages easier. This requires a sample or detailed documentation and an engineer who can answer technical questions.
Writing, from content audit to final Turkish text
Content audit
Gaps, contradictions, outdated information and image–text mismatches in the source text are identified. The results are presented to you as an issue list, with the location of each item. You can decide the scope of rewriting based on this list.
Rebuilding the structure
Sections are reorganised along the logic of safety, installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Users usually open a manual only when they have a problem; a clear table of contents helps them find the answer quickly. Similar products can share the same section skeleton.
Plain-language writing
Short sentences, active voice and consistent terminology make reading and later translation easier. Each step describes a single action and states the expected result. A Chinese master text like this retains the same clarity when translated into Turkish.
Completing safety information
Warning and caution notes are added according to product risk; for exact compliance requirements, your certification body’s opinion should be the reference. We arrange warnings according to the standard or certification requirements you provide. Your certification body or compliance team decides on regulatory conformity.
Image suggestions
Places that need additional images or redrawing are flagged, reducing reliance on text. A good diagram overcomes language barriers and also reduces translation volume. We prepare the image descriptions; the drawings are made by your design team or designers we work with.
Final Turkish text
The approved content is translated into Turkish and edited by a technical translator. Because the Chinese master text is already clear and well organised, translation quality and speed improve. A native Turkish editor checks the readability of the Turkish version.

What you need to provide
- Existing manual, specifications or engineering documents
- Product sample, usage video or detailed photos (the closer to real use, the better)
- Contact for an engineer who can answer questions
- Applicable certification or standard requirements, if any (provided by you or the certification body)
Four stages from getting to know the product to the Turkish version
- 1
Getting to know the product
The product’s functions and typical usage scenarios are studied through documents, videos or a sample. We list our questions and ask your engineers to answer them one by one. The better the product is understood, the more accurately the steps are written.
- 2
Presenting a writing plan
A table of contents and a sample section are prepared, and the style is agreed with you. Once the sample section is approved, we move on to the full text, so no large-scale corrections are needed due to a wrong direction. Style covers the form of address, sentence length and the ratio of images to text.
- 3
Writing the Chinese master text
The Chinese version is written, and your engineers approve its technical accuracy. Technical values, operating steps and safety information must always be approved by you. Clarity of expression is our responsibility; technical accuracy is yours.
- 4
Translation into Turkish
The approved text is translated and edited and can be passed on to the layout service. The Chinese master text and Turkish version are archived together and updated together in later versions. If a print file is needed, we move directly to the layout stage.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between technical writing and translation?
Translation conveys the source text faithfully; technical writing makes the content usable by changing its structure and wording. If the source is good, direct translation is enough; if it has problems, writing first is recommended. We can look at a short sample and tell you which applies.
Is a rewritten manual guaranteed to pass certification?
We cannot guarantee the certification outcome. We write according to the standard requirements you provide; the final compliance decision is made by the certification body or your compliance team. We also do not issue CE, TSE or other certificates.
Can we use the Chinese master text in other markets as well?
Yes. A well-organised master text makes translation into English or other languages easier and lowers later translation costs. Because all language versions are based on the same master text, content consistency is also easier to maintain.
Will rewriting take up a lot of our engineers’ time?
It is usually concentrated in two stages: answering our question list at the start and giving technical approval once the Chinese master text is finished. Rather than asking questions piecemeal, we send them in batches. Providing a usage video or sample significantly reduces the number of questions your engineer needs to answer.
What are Turkish users’ manual-reading habits?
As in many markets, users look at the images first and read the text only when they run into a problem, so clear images and eye-catching warnings matter. Turkish manuals usually use the polite “siz” form of address and clear imperatives. We tailor the Turkish version to these habits.
There’s no source file, only a PDF; can it still be rewritten?
Yes. We can extract the text from the PDF as a reference and deliver the rewritten content as a new Word or layout file. If the resolution of existing images is insufficient, we flag those that need to be resupplied or redrawn.
Who owns the rights to the rewritten manual?
The manual is written for your product, and you use the content after delivery. Ownership of rights and scope of use can also be specified in the contract. We do not use your product information for other clients.
